Microsoft Delivers SharePoint App for iOS
This morning, Microsoft announced that the SharePoint app for iOS is now available. Versions for Android and Windows are expected later in the year, I was told.
“The SharePoint mobile app allows you to keep your work moving forward while you’re on the go by giving quick access to team sites, organization portals and resources, and a view into what your team is working on,” a Microsoft representative told me.
Microsoft announced the SharePoint mobile app back in May, noting that it would provide the full power of SharePoint on your phone, with Office Graph intelligence and access to multiple accounts.
Today’s release on iOS is the first of the mobile app releases. It works with SharePoint Online in Office 365, SharePoint Server (2013 and 2016) on-premises and with hybrid environments. It offers four main UI areas:
Sites. Here, you access the sites you visit frequently and sites you’re following. When you select an Office document, it will open in the appropriate Office Mobile app, of course.
Links. This tab lets you access the curated sites and portals that were created for your organization by your SharePoint administrators.
People. Here, you can see the people you work with, what they’re working on, and with whom: Just select an individual to see their contact card and their various connections.
Search. This option obviously lets you search SharePoint, and it can do so while filtering by sites, files and people. This the full enterprise search experience, so you can find content and people from across your intranet, SharePoint team sites, company portals and the OneDrive for Business folders you have access to, Microsoft says.
In addition to shipping versions of the app for Android and Windows, Microsoft has other plans for the SharePoint app, including support for cross-company news and announcements.
