Microsoft Ships Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14291 for PC and Mobile
Today—very late today—Microsoft announced the release of Windows 10 Insider Preview build 14291 for both PC and Mobile to Fast ring testers. And this one includes a ton of new features, including Edge extensions, plus some big app updates.
Let’s jump right in. Here’s what’s new in build 14291.
Microsoft Edge extensions. As I described in Microsoft Edge is Finally Getting Extensions Support, this is the first Insider build to offer access to Edge extensions.
Microsoft Edge pinned tabs. Edge has also been updated to support pinned tabs, meaning you can now have your most-used sites open with the browser and always available. To pin a tab, just right-click on it and choose “Pin tab”.

More Microsoft Edge improvements. But wait, there’s more: Edge also picks up a new Paste and Go option for when there is a URL in the clipboard, and a bigger close tab button on Mobile.

Updated Maps app. Responding to my complaints from the other day, Microsoft has updated the Maps app big-time. I’ll be writing about this separately, but the update includes architectural and UX improvements, plus a lot of new features.

Updated Alarms & Clock app. The Alarm & Clock app picks up a new inline time picker and an improved design for creating and editing alarms and timers, Microsoft says.

Japanese one-handed kana touch keyboard. You can now select a one-handed kana touch keyboard for Japanese text typing that works like it does on a mobile device. You can place it on the left or right side of the screen.

Japanese Lined-mode Text Input Canvas. The new Japanese lined-mode Text Input Canvas provides a more natural and intuitive text input for people who enter Japanese text. Microsoft says it works great with a pen.

New Feedback Hub app. As promised, the Insider Hub and Windows Feedback apps have been combined into a single app called the Feedback Hub, and it’s available on both PC and Mobile.

This build also includes a number of fixes and known issues on both PC and mobile. Or what other blogs would call “four more blog posts.” I won’t waste your time: You can find them all right here.
